Overview

Founded in 1993 by Jean Tran Thanh Van, the association Rencontres du Vietnam, a non-profit organization and an official partner of UNESCO, has as its objective the promotion of international exchanges between Vietnam and the international community, particularly in the areas of science and education. It also aims at the encouragement and integration of Vietnamese scientists into the international scientific community and at supporting the role of education and science by encouraging scientific awareness and stimulating passion for science in the younger generation. The Rencontres du Vietnam lies within the scope of two series of scientific meetings created by Jean Tran Thanh Van: the Rencontres de Moriond in 1966 and the Rencontres de Blois in 1989.

The creation of the International Centre for Interdisciplinary Science Education (ICISE) in the city of Quy Nhon (Central Vietnam) has the ambitious objective to focus on developing Science and Education by fostering exchanges between Asia-Pacific scientists and colleagues from other parts of the world.

XXth Rencontres du Vietnam
Materials Informatics: Accelerating Materials Research and Design with Artificial Intelligence
August 23-25, 2024, ICISE, Quy Nhon, Vietnam

Materials Informatics has emerged as a new subfield, or, in other words, a new ecosystem, of Materials Science & Engineering during about a decade ago or so, since the early 2010s. In this ultra-fast-growing and highly-interdisciplinary research and development (R&D) area, Deep Knowledge from multiple fields such as Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, Big Data of various natures from Materials Research, and especially advanced Artificial-Intelligent (AI)/Machine-Learning (ML) techniques, are integrated to deepen the understanding and to accelerate the discoveries of new materials for targeted applications. In the last few years, Materials Informatics is blossoming globally with numerous discoveries of novel functional materials, e.g., semiconductors, superconductors, quantum materials, and polymers. This international workshop is designed with two main objectives, including (1) to introduce and disseminate Materials Informatics and its publicly-available infrastructures that were developed in the world during the last decade, and (2) to provide hand-on instructions that allow participants to access the infrastructures, to familiarize with the real problems, and to actually handle some simplest problems in a pedagogical way.

Topics that will be covered in the workshop are, but not limited to

  1. Materials data generation, management, and dissemination
  2. Data featurization and dimensionality reduction
  3. Approaches to handle data scarcity, including transfer, active, and multi-task learning
  4. Novel AI-based methods for materials data learning and inverse design of materials
  5. AI-based approaches to bridge the gap between microscopic simulations and realistic length and time scales
  6. AI-driven robotic systems for optimizing and discovering targeted materials

Format. The workshop will have an opening ceremony, some plenary/keynote lectures, invited talks, oral, and poster presentations in parallel sessions. Excursions will be organized, offering delegates further opportunities to network and to discover the beauty of the city of Quy Nhon in Binh Dinh province, Vietnam.

Official languages. English is the official language at the workshop.

Awards. Encouraging awards are waiting for excellent women participants, underrepresented minorities, and the best oral/poster presentations.
